To understand the role of optical wireless communications (OWC) in 6G, it is crucial to explore the specific services where it offers distinct advantages. Academia and industry agree that 6G will drive massive deployment of machine-type nodes in 2D/3D service areas, demanding unprecedented reliability, ultra-low latency, and higher data rates. Beyond these, 6G aims to enable energy-efficient communication, built-in security, privacy, trustworthiness, and networked sensing and localization.
These requirements reshape wireless network design, creating new opportunities for OWC adoption as a complementary,not competitiv,technology to RF. Integrating RF and optical spectrum under a cross-band PHY and MAC layer design is critical to achieving 6G KPIs, pushing wireless communication boundaries. This talk highlights these opportunities, showcasing examples, preliminary results, challenges, and future research directions.
报告人简介:
Prof. Karagiannidis' research spans Digital Communications Systems and Signal Processing, with a focus on Wireless Communications, Optical Wireless Communications, Wireless Power Transfer, Communications for Biomedical Engineering, Stochastic Processes in Biology, and Wireless Security.
Prof. Karagiannidis has held various leadership roles in IEEE and non-IEEE conferences, including General Chair and Technical Program Chair. He served as Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, EURASIP Journal of Wireless Communications & Networks, and IEEE Selected Areas in Communications. From 2012 to 2015, he was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Communications Letters and from 2019 to 2022, the founding Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. He is currently an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications.
