讲座题目:The influence of microstructure on rail life prediction

讲座时间:2024年9月24日10:00-12:00

讲座地点:摩擦学研究所四楼大会议室

主讲人简介:

Professor Pedro Riverahas been appointed in 2017 Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair. He has been professor and head of the Materials and Structures Group at Lancaster University between 2017 and 2022. From 2009 to 2017 he was Assistant Director of Research at the Steel Technology Centre at University of Cambridge, where he taught and led a research group mainly focusing on ultra-high strength steels, but also working on titanium, magnesium and high entropy alloys. His research has resulted in a variety of novel steel grades leading to three international patents and over 183 articles in international journals.

讲座内容简介:

His presentation aims to provide a comprehensive review of current methodologies to predict damage evolution in rail steels. The influence of microstructure on wear and fatigue is the focus of attention. How can a multiscale microstructure be tailored to delay crack nucleation and control its growth? Simulations at the microstructural level indicate that variations in properties can influence rail life. But can these variations be controlled throughout rail life?

The dislocation-assisted carbon migration model (DACM) has been adopted to successfully predict bearing rolling contact fatigue. This unique approach, that has never been applied to rail, makes carbon redistribution the main culprit of damage evolution at various times and space scales, controlling the transitions in microstructures such as carbide dissolution, growth, reprecipitation, and residual stress evolution. A first attempt to present DACM to rail steels is presented here.
