HingCheung So was born in Hong Kong. He received the B.Eng. degree from City Universityof Hong Kong and the Ph.D. degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong,both in electronic engineering, in 1990 and 1995, respectively. From 1990 to1991, he was an Electronic Engineer at the Research & Development Divisionof Everex Systems Engineering Ltd., Hong Kong. During 1995–1996, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at The Chinese Universityof Hong Kong. From 1996 to 1999, he was a Research Assistant Professor at the Departmentof Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. Currently, he is anAssociate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at CityUniversity of Hong Kong. His research interests include fast and adaptive filter,signal detection, parameter estimation and source localization. He has been on theeditorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Signal Processing, DigitalSignal Processing and ISRN Applied Mathematics as well as a member in Signal ProcessingTheory and Methods Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

SourceLocalization: Applications and Algorithms(信源定位:算法及应用)

 

Findingthe position of a target based on measurements from an array of spatially separatedsensors has been an important problem in radar, sonar, global positioningsystem, mobile communications, multimedia and wireless sensor networks.Time-of-arrival (TOA), time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA), received signalstrength (RSS) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the emitted signal arecommonly used measurements for source localization. Basically, TOAs, TDOAs and RSSsprovide the distance information between the source and sensors while DOAs arethe source bearings relative to the receivers. However, locating the target isnot a trivial task because these measurements have nonlinear relationships withthe source position.

Inthis talk, representative applications of source localization will first bedescribed. Nonlinear and linear approaches for TOA-, TDOA-, RSS- and DOA-basedpositioning will then be presented. The performance of the location estimatorswill also be examined. Finally, possible directions for future research onsource localization will be discussed.
